What you may do with an instrument you bought from us, and what you may not. The same text travels inside every download, so you always have it to hand. Nothing here is written to catch you out – if a case is not covered, write to us and we will answer it plainly.
This licence governs your use of any instrument you bought from us (the “instrument”), including its samples, patches, scripts, graphics and documentation. The instrument is licensed to you, not sold. JRM-Studios, Inh. Johannes Riedl remains its owner.
Your purchase is governed by our terms and conditions. Where this licence and those terms differ, the terms and conditions apply.
Install it on every machine in your own setup. A studio workstation and a mobile rig, or four workstations – as long as they are yours, this licence covers them. The licence is personal: it covers you, not a facility with several independent users. If other people are to work with the instrument, each of them needs their own licence.
Use it commercially in anything you produce. Film, television, games, trailers, advertising, production music, library music, your own releases. You need no further permission and owe us nothing beyond the purchase price. This applies for as long as your work exists – it does not expire with this licence.
Use the samples on their own, where the product allows it. Instruments marked “solo use allowed” may be used unmasked: as a transition, a bumper, a stinger or a sound effect, with nothing layered over them. One limit applies, and it follows from how rights registration works rather than from us – see section 4.
Make your own copies for backup. As many as you need, for your own use.
You may not pass on, resell, lend, rent, sublicense or publish the instrument or its samples as such, in whole or in part, whether or not for payment. This includes handing them to a colleague, uploading them to shared storage others can reach, or including them in a project file you deliver to a client as raw material.
You may not include the samples in another sample library, sound pack, instrument, loop set or sound effects collection, and you may not make them available in any form from which they can be extracted again as raw material.
You may not reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the instrument, except where the law expressly permits it.
In short: what you make with the samples is yours. The samples themselves stay ours.
A sample used on its own, with nothing layered over it, cannot be registered with a performing rights organisation such as GEMA, BMI or ASCAP, nor claimed through YouTube Content ID. The recording is ours, and registering it as your own work would be a claim to rights you do not hold.
This is not a restriction on using it. Commercial use of unmasked samples is expressly permitted under section 2. It only means you cannot register the recording itself.
Once a sample is part of a musical work of your own – arranged, layered, played as an instrument – the work is yours and you register it as you would any other.
The licence is perpetual. It ends only if you breach section 3, or if you choose to end it by deleting the instrument and all copies of it.
If it ends, you stop using the instrument and remove it from your machines. Work you produced with it while the licence was in force stays unaffected – you do not have to withdraw a film, a game or a release.
Payment, delivery, your right of withdrawal, defects, liability and applicable law are dealt with in our terms and conditions. They are not repeated here, so that there is only ever one version of them.
